time ago,before old-Greek and old-Roman philosophers,
scientists and doctors people believed that spiritual
forces ruled over material world. They were to blame for
mental illness.
Religious principles and social structure have always
had influence over behavior. We can see many examples
in the history, studying different cultures and people.
Old Egyptians, Hebrews and the Chinese believed that persons
whose behavior was strange were obsessed by ghosts.

If the behavior of the man was
mystical and according to actual religion that person
was respected because other people thought that he or
she was obsessed by good spirit. But if the behavior
was not according to religious and social principles
people believed that the person was obsessed by an evil
spirit. Those people were exposed to the ritual in order
to" drive out the devil. "It consisted of
innocent prayers, starvation, whiping, stigmatization.
In some cases their blood was drawn or their skull was
bored so an evil spirit could come out.

During the period of development
of the classic thought, which lasted forty years, these
principles were abandoned. The scientist of old Greek
came to different knowledge in this
field. On the other hand it was laid a foundation of
human treatment.
Hippocrates ( 460 - 377 B.C.), the fater of modern medicine,
was the first person who realized brain is the center
of human mind. It was the first connection between mental
breakdown and medicine. For the first time abnormal
persons were treated like patients.
