| THE MIDDLE
AGES:
In this period the clergy took
over care of mentally disturbed persons. Under the influence
of theology the old demon principles were restored.
In time complete psyhiatric theory and practice were
exhausted through constant persecution of
heretics. The ritual by which the devil was driven out
was also restored. There was opinion that mentally disturbed
persons were in collusion with Satan and that they had
supernatural power. The torment of the body was regarded
as torment of Satan who was in it.
